Black History Is Gold: Esperanza Spalding's New 'Black Gold' Video
Every day is a reflection and celebration of Black struggle, freedom and possibility on Urban Cusp! Yet, in honor of pioneers and freedom fighters like Dr. Carter G. Woodson, we will be highlighting Black History Month throughout February through videos, images, quotes, and sounds in this "Black History Is" series. It is our desire to pay homage to our past, live more fully into our present and work tirelessly towards our future. Journey with us to see what we think "Black History Is" and be sure to tell us what it is to you!
Esperanza Spalding, the Portland Oregon native Jazz musician, is gearing up for her next album and to prepare her fans she drops off the video for “Black Gold”. The visuals take place at an outdoor concert of sorts, with Esperanza linking up with neo-soul singer Algebra Blessett. During which a father teaches his children about African history. “Black Gold” is an uplifting soul infused jazz track about how beautiful black really is. Both the track and the video are a throwback to the days of smooth music that had a purpose, a meaning beyond entertaining.
“Black Gold” if not great, is a beautifully arranged song that will have you feeling great about yourself, no matter race, age, or creed. Keep an eye out for Esperanza Spaulding’s latest album entitled Radio Music Society, “Black Gold” will be a part of it.
