QOTD: What do You Think of Pharell’s Perception of a ‘New Black’ Identity?

In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, Pharrell Williams explained his perception of a “new black” identity as not blaming other races for the issues blacks face in Western society. He states:

The “new black” doesn’t blame other races for our issues. The “new black” dreams and realizes that it’s not a pigmentation; it’s a mentality. And it’s either going to work for you, or it’s going to work against you.  And you’ve got to pick the side you’re gonna be on.

In response to his idea of a “new black” identity,  Twitter users took to their social media accounts to make fun of the artist and producer with the #whatkindofblackareyou hashtag.

What do you think of Pharrell’s perception of a  “new black”  identity? Do you think black celebrities who share similar sentiments are oblivious to the reality of structural racism?
